About Us

Role

The National Bank of Biological Material (NBBM) was established in 2014 at the National Research Institute of Animal Production for the purpose of ex situ conservation of farm animal genetic resources. The biological material at the NBBM, which has been collected from the breeds covered by the Genetic Resources Conservation Programme and from animals with outstanding production and breeding characteristics, is a reserve gene pool in the event of emergence of threats jeopardizing the biodiversity of animal populations. […]

Cryopreservation

Cryopreservation of genetic material allows for reproduction to be controlled effectively while contributing significantly to breeding progress and maintenance of genetically determined diversity. With this method we are able to collect and store for an indefinite period the biological material from farm animals in the form of male/female gametes and embryos. […]

Achievements

A highly qualified staff of researchers at the National Research Institute of Animal Production has used its long-term scientific achievements and experience to implement NBBM tasks in ex situ conservation of the native breeds, in accordance with the Regulation of the Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development from 6 June 2008 (Journal of Laws, 2008, no. 108, item 691). In view of the above, the biological material of farm animals at the NBBM is cryopreserved according to the latest technology, which guarantees the highest standards.  […]
